Lock Doors When You’re Home

Safety Quick Tip: Lock the doors to your home even when you are there.
This may seem like common sense to you so if that is the case, remind those you love about this tip.
What inspired this tip: My dad and I visited neighbors at Christmas at night (not that it matters what time of day it is) and although I believe this couple tends to lock doors when they are home together, when we walked in, the woman said to the man as he reached to lock the door, “That’s not necessary, while we’re here.” YES, she DID get an ear-full from yours truly! ALWAYS lock your doors.
Real-Life Story: I was in a friend’s house in Phoenix when a car jacker was on the loose, causing accidents and stealing car after car after car. He ended up in our neighborhood and ran from door to door until he found an unlocked home. It happened to be next door to where I was visiting and there was a teen girl in the shower.
The attacker ended up shooting and killing a police K-9 and the girl escaped out the bathroom window and ran to a neighbors for help. We had to get out of the house we were in so the SWAT Team could move in. There was a standoff for many hours before we could return.
My point: Wouldn’t it have been much easier and safer to lock the doors?
Be safe and have a happy New Year filled with fun & gratitude!

Kelly, your story got my blood boiling because we are all as random a target as the car jacker going into the house next door.
It is not an effort to lock a door when you come in and we do, perhaps because we were taught to do so as kids.
Thanks for the reminder, see you on #TSS.

Yes, Edward, this seems to get the blood boiling of many who read it. It is like being a safe driver and then getting smashed by a drunk driver!
See you in #TSS,

Growing up in Miami and Orlando, locking a door behind me happens without thinking…

Thank you, Maritza! I have to make safety fun and non-scary. The attacks are scary so safety must be fun!
